IP addresses in United Kingdom

What a geolocation country of United Kingdom tends to mean, and which networks sit behind it.

UK address space is registered through RIPE NCC. The ASN on a home connection is the retail provider, not Openreach: BT AS2856, Sky AS5607, Virgin Media AS5089, and TalkTalk AS13285 are the ones that show up for a large share of fixed lines. Mobile sits on the retail mobile networks, and those addresses are often shared.

IPv6 is deployed at BT and Sky and is still absent on plenty of individual lines, so a missing IPv6 line on the homepage is not a fault by itself. Geolocation inside the UK has a London habit: a national ISP’s registered network, or a central broadband gateway, gets a London pin for customers in other cities. Country “GB” can still be right when the city is not. Compare databases before treating a London result as the line’s location.

The regional registry is RIPE NCC. What is my IP address · IP location wrong?

Questions

What does an IP country of the United Kingdom mean?

A database assigned the address to the UK. National ISPs often geolocate to London even when the line is elsewhere in the country.

Is the ASN Openreach?

Usually no. Openreach is the access network for many brands. The ASN on a lookup is the retail ISP, such as BT, Sky, Virgin Media, or TalkTalk.
