# IP location wrong
> Why IP geolocation databases disagree, and how to correct a wrong city.
There is no official city for an IP address. Registries record who was allocated the block and, sometimes, a country. The city is inferred.

This page compares free sources side by side (Cloudflare, when the address is yours, plus ipwho.is, DB-IP, and a GeoJS comparison row). DB-IP is credited as IP Geolocation by DB-IP under CC BY 4.0. The GeoJS row uses MaxMind GeoLite for comparison and is not resold. MaxMind and IPinfo are linked as correction forms even though this page does not query IPinfo.

Do not file a correction for a CGNAT address, a VPN exit, or an anycast address such as 1.1.1.1. Pinning those to one house makes the database worse for everyone else.

## Questions

### Why is my IP location wrong?

City and coordinates are a vendor’s estimate, not GPS. Databases update on different days, so the same address can be two cities at once.

### Why do IP location databases disagree?

They infer a place from registry country, routing, user reports, and geofeeds. A shared mobile address, a VPN exit, or an anycast address should not be pinned to one house.

### How do I correct a wrong IP location?

If you operate the network, publish an RFC 8805 geofeed. For one stable address, use the correction forms for MaxMind, IPinfo, ipapi.is, and DB-IP.
